App Store conversion rate: what it is and how to improve it

How conversion rate is measured in App Store Connect, what moves it, and how to tell if a change helped.

Conversion rate is the share of people who download your app after seeing it on the App Store. Rankings bring people to your listing; conversion decides how many of them become users.

How it is measured

App Store Connect’s App Analytics divides downloads by the number of unique devices that saw your app, in search results, browsing or on your product page. You can break it down by source (search, browse, web referrer, app referrer) and by country.

  • Impressions: times your app was shown, in lists or on its product page.
  • Product page views: times your full product page was opened.
  • Downloads: first-time downloads (and, separately, redownloads).
  • Conversion rate: downloads relative to unique impressions.

What improves conversion

  • The first screenshots. In search results, people decide from your icon, name, subtitle, rating and first screenshots.
  • Ratings. A higher average and more ratings build trust. Prompt at a moment of success.
  • Relevance. Ranking for searches that don’t match your app brings views that don’t convert. Better keywords can raise conversion.
  • Localization. Screenshots and copy in the visitor’s language.
  • Testing. Product page optimization tests your icon, screenshots and previews against the original; custom product pages tailor the page for one audience.

Seeing it next to your rankings

With App Store Connect analytics, asorocket shows impressions, product page views, downloads and conversion for your apps by day, source and country, next to your keyword rankings and release history, so you can see what a metadata change did to both.
